The Rise of Green Hiring in 2025

In 2025, Ireland’s commitment to sustainability is influencing the employment landscape, leading to a marked increase in ‘green’ hiring practices. This shift is driven by both governmental policies and corporate initiatives aimed at achieving environmental goals to achieve our UN targets. It is also driven by our own awareness of macro environmental challenges. There are 17 Sustainable Development Goals, 169 Targets and 230 Indicators which focus on five key elements:

  • People
  • Planet
  • Peace
  • Prosperity
  • Partnership

Green Job Postings & Green Skills

Recent data indicates a substantial rise in green job postings across Ireland. Research from Indeed reveals a 93% increase in such postings since 2019, underscoring the growing demand for roles centered on sustainability. However, the surge contrasts with a 7% decline in jobseeker interest in these positions, suggesting a potential skills gap in the market.

The Labour Market Pulse report by IDA Ireland, in collaboration with Microsoft and LinkedIn, highlights that the demand for green skills in Ireland grew by 22.1% in 2023, surpassing the global average of 11.6%. Notably, one in eight Irish job postings now requires at least one green skill, reflecting the integration of sustainability across various industries.

Challenges in Green Recruitment

Despite the increasing availability of green jobs, companies face challenges in attracting suitable candidates. Misconceptions persist among jobseekers, with 40% believing that sustainability roles are low-paid and 63% thinking these positions are confined to specific industries. Additionally, nearly 40% of potential applicants are uncertain about the qualifications required for such roles as quoted by Senior Economist, Jack Kennedy from Indeed in early 2024.

Conclusion

As Ireland progresses towards its environmental objectives, the emphasis on green hiring is set to intensify. Green skills are most concentrated in industries like utilities, construction, and manufacturing. The need for skills in sustainable supply chain and pollution are spreading to other industries. Bridging the skills gap through targeted education and training programs, such as courses developed by Skillnet and other providers, will be crucial in meeting the evolving demands of the job market. For jobseekers, this shift presents a unique opportunity to engage in meaningful careers that contribute to a sustainable future.
