Book & Video Recommendations
Amazon is one of those companies that is known worldwide and is somewhat infamous across the globe. Many wonder what goes on inside the walls of Amazon and how did this success story transpire out of a company which launched in a garage.
This book focuses on how success is not driven by any one particular person, but rather through commitment and execution of a process. It is written by two former employees, who worked at Amazon through a period of immense growth. It is super interesting to hear first-hand from people who have lived through such an exciting time in a major MNC’s success and you would be surprised at some of the insights they offer from their time there. An informative and inspiring read for anyone interested in leadership, development and business in general.
In this enlightening talk, futurist Juan Enriquez takes a look back at what was once deemed normal or acceptable within humanity. This includes everything from human sacrifices and slavery to human execution – things which seem absolutely crazy now in Western society at least.
What’s really interesting in this talk is that Enriquez focuses on how technological advancements have actually resulted in absolving some of this unethical behaviour. Enriquez is a mind of our times who thinks and writes about changes brought about by our way of thinking which is then visible in technology and society as a whole. I enjoy his work and this video is no different. Well worth a watch!
Recent Performance Articles Worth Reading
Careers on the forefront have changed, not just as result of COVID-19 and the implementation of remote working, but over the past number of years due to people’s desire for more flexible working and becoming more fluid within their careers. Long gone are the days of people staying in the one permanent job for life. People like to move around more, try different things and have more desire for autonomy in their roles.
This article examines this trend of ‘portfolio careers’ and why some people actually have a preference towards these these days. It also delves into the death of the ‘linear career’ and why freelancers are on the rise. It’s a great read for job seekers, recruiters and employers alike, as we all adapt to a more career fluid society and the continuing adaptations as a result of the pandemic.

Most of us can probably hold our hands up and say that we are sometimes so busy being IN our lives that we forget to take a step back and assess the quality of our lives and whether that needs some attention, particularly given the past year we have experienced.
This piece explores three quite simple things that we can do to be kinder to ourselves and course-correct towards growth, health and healing. I won’t spoil them for you but will say that each is loosely based around an aspect of letting go of certain expectations.
It’s a useful and practical guide to self-assessment and simple strategies to improve how we feel about our lives and definitely worth a few minutes’ contemplation.

From high school valedictorian to becoming the youngest ever SVP at investment firm D.E. Shaw to founding one of ecommerce’s biggest success stories Amazon, Jeff Bezos gained notoriety over the years as being a brilliant entrepreneur with an amazing mind despite the occasional scandal or misstep.
Bezos’ recent announcement that he would be stepping down from his role as CEO of Amazon inspired this thread of tweets from David Perell listing various lessons he had learned from Bezos over the years and went viral.
A refreshing change from the traditional article or blog format, there’s a lot of wisdom in here and I find it interesting to see the reactions/comments on each tweet. Some of the subjects include decision-making, management style, innovation and customer. This is a must-read for anyone with an interest in seeing a variety of perspectives on a unique entrepreneur.
